BGP INNOVATOR is the world's first large shallow-water special exploration vessel equipped with dynamic positioning. The ship was designed and developed under the leadership of Dalian Hengxing Ship Engineering Design Co., Ltd., in collaboration with BGP Inc., China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), Dalian Maritime University, and other institutions and individuals. It was built by Dalian Binhai Shipyard Co., Ltd. and has been classified by both Bureau Veritas (BV) and the China Classification Society (CCS).
The “BGP INNOVATOR” is the first vessel to adopt a fully electric propulsion system, enabling digital management and intelligent control of the ship's control systems. Its hull features a wide, flat bulbous bow design that significantly improves stability during shallow-water operations. It is currently the world’s only large-scale shallow-water Ocean Bottom Node (OBN) special exploration vessel, equipped with integrated capabilities including navigation, source activation, node deployment and recovery, data acquisition, and quality control. With a minimum operating depth of just 5 meters, the vessel’s shallow draft design allows it to meet the requirements of a wide range of operating environments, making it suitable for exploration missions across diverse global waters. This innovation fills a significant global gap in equipment for similar offshore exploration scenarios.
The ship is built primarily to serve the high-end international OBN market, meeting the highest standards of safety, environmental protection, green low-carbon practices, and human-centric design set by leading global oil companies.
As a cutting-edge seismic acquisition technology in the global geophysical industry, Ocean Bottom Node (OBN) exploration offers significant advantages over traditional towed streamer and Ocean Bottom Cable (OBC) methods. With its high coverage, high signal-to-noise ratio, long offset, and full-azimuth imaging capabilities, OBN greatly improves subsurface imaging in complex seabed geological conditions. It has earned the trust and preference of major international oil companies.
